Texas Permit Practice Test
Free 30-question practice test for your Texas learner permit — no signup, no email. Instant feedback, unlimited retakes, and the same 70% passing bar as the real exam.
What's On This Practice Test
Every attempt pulls 30 random questions from a bank of 103, and the answer choices reshuffle each time — so retaking it actually tests you instead of your memory of the answer order. 79 of the questions use real road-sign and signal images, because sign identification is where new drivers miss the most points.
You get instant feedback after every answer with a short explanation of the rule behind it, plus a full review of every question at the end. And it's completely free with no catch: no signup, no email, nothing saved or sent anywhere. The questions load with the page, so take it as many times as you want.
How the Real Texas Permit Test Works
The real Texas knowledge exam is 30 multiple-choice questions, and you need 21 correct — 70% — to pass. This practice test uses the same format and the same passing bar.
Can you take the permit test online in Texas? Yes — if you're taking driver ed. Texas doesn't offer a standalone official online test on the DPS website, but every TDLR-approved course (parent-taught or commercial) includes the knowledge exam online, inside the course. Pass it there and you take no written test at the DPS office — your DE-964 certificate is the proof you passed. In our course, the exam is 30 questions with a 60-minute timer and a 70% passing score; if you fail, you wait 24 hours before retaking it.
Is the Texas permit test hard? Not if you've done the coursework: the vast majority of our students pass the in-course knowledge exam on their first attempt. The exam comes after the first six hours of Lesson 1, which covers exactly what the test asks about.
What the Exam Actually Covers
Everything on the exam comes from the Texas Driver Handbook. Expect questions on:
- Road signs and signals — identifying signs by shape, color, and symbol. This is the highest-yield study area: once you know the logic (red means stop or prohibition, yellow means warning, orange means construction), you can answer questions about signs you've never memorized.
- Right-of-way rules — who yields at intersections, four-way stops, and left turns.
- Speed limits — the default limits for different road types and when conditions require you to slow below the posted limit.
- Lane markings — what solid versus broken yellow and white lines let you do.
- Safe following distance — how much space to leave and what stretches it (speed, weather, big vehicles).
- Parking rules — where you can and can't park, and which way to turn your wheels on a hill.
- Alcohol and license-penalty laws — Texas is zero-tolerance for drivers under 21, and the exam tests the penalties that follow violations.
How to Use This Test to Get Ready
- Take a full 30-question run to see where you stand.
- Read the feedback on every question you miss — the explanation is the study material.
- Retake it until you score 80% or higher twice in a row. That gives you a comfortable buffer over the real exam's 70% bar.
- Then take the real thing: in a TDLR-approved course, the knowledge exam unlocks after your first six classroom hours. See the full Texas learner permit process for every step from enrollment to the DPS visit.
