Frequently Asked Questions
Texas requires you to hold your learner permit for at least 6 months before you can apply for a provisional driver license. This gives you time to practice driving with a licensed adult.
If you're already 16, you still need to hold your learner permit for 6 months. The license eligibility date is whichever comes later: your 16th birthday OR 6 months after getting your permit.
If you turn 18 before getting your license, the 6-month permit waiting period no longer applies. You can get your license as soon as you complete the course requirements and pass your road test.
