Instructor Eligibility Checker

Find out if you qualify to be a parent instructor for Texas Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE). Answer a few questions to check your eligibility. This is a simplified check — see the full TDLR eligibility requirements for the complete list.

Do you have a valid driver's license?

This must be a full driver's license, not a learner permit or ID card. You will need a Texas license by the time of the DPS appointment.

Have you held a valid driver's license for at least 3 years?

This includes time licensed in other states or countries.

Have you had a DWI/DUI conviction in the past 7 years?

This includes probated sentences and deferred adjudication.

Has your license been suspended in the past 3 years?

This includes any suspension, revocation, or forfeiture for traffic violations.

Do you have 6 or more points on your license?

Points are assigned for moving violations. Check with DPS if unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions

A parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian can be the instructor. Other adults (such as aunts, uncles, or family friends) may qualify as a designated instructor if they are at least 25 years old and have 7 or more years of driving experience.

Your driving experience from other states and countries counts toward the 3-year requirement. You will need a valid Texas driver's license by the time of the DPS appointment.

If you're not eligible, another family member who meets the requirements can be designated as the instructor. Alternatively, you can enroll your teen in a commercial driving school.

Only one person can be the official designated instructor on the PTDE paperwork. However, both parents can help with supervised practice driving.
