Texas Road Test Checklist: What to Bring

Documents & People

• Valid Learner Permit — Your current Texas learner permit, held for at least 6 months. It expires on your 18th birthday — renew it first if it has expired.
• ITTD Certificate (Printed) — Impact Texas Teen Drivers completion certificate, completed within 90 days of your test date. Complete it on a desktop or laptop and print the certificate — DPS will not accept it on a phone. (18 or older? The 1-hour ITAD course works too.)
• DE-964 Certificate (Phase 2) — Final certificate showing completion of all 24 hours of classroom instruction and 14 hours of in-car instruction.
• 30-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Practice Log — Completed log showing 30 hours of practice driving, including at least 10 hours at night. DPS checks this log — the 14-hour DL-91B instruction log is not required at the appointment.
• VOE (Verification of Enrollment) — Current proof of school enrollment, required if under 18. Must be dated within 30 days (90 days if issued June through August).
• PTDE Packet (First Page) — The first page of your TDLR parent-taught packet, showing your receipt number and designated instructor. Parent-taught students only.
• Proof of Identity — Original state-issued birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
• Social Security Card — Original card — the name must match your identity document.
• Two Proofs of Texas Residency — Two documents from different sources showing a physical Texas address (not a P.O. box).
• Proof of Car Insurance — Current insurance card for the vehicle being used for the test.
• Vehicle Registration — Current registration for the test vehicle. Check that it's not expired.
• Parent or Legal Guardian — Must attend in person if you're under 18. If your parent instructor isn't your parent or legal guardian, both must attend with the Instructor Designation Form.
• Glasses or Contacts (if applicable) — If needed to drive, bring them. You'll fail the vision test without them.

Vehicle

• Current Registration Sticker — Valid, unexpired registration sticker on the windshield.
• Current Inspection Sticker — Valid state inspection sticker (if required in your county).
• Front & Rear License Plates — Both plates must be present and clearly visible.
• Working Lights — Headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights all working.
• Working Horn — Horn must be functional.
• All Mirrors Present — Rearview mirror and both side mirrors must be in place.
• Working Seatbelts — Driver and front passenger seatbelts must work properly.
• All Doors Open/Close — All doors must open from inside and outside, and close securely.
• Clean Interior — Remove clutter from the front and back seats. The examiner needs space and clear sightlines.

Reminders

• • Fee: $16 provisional license fee (cash, check, money order, or card).
• • Wear flat, closed-toe shoes — no flip-flops, slides, or heels.
• • ITTD certificate must be printed and completed within 90 days of your test.
