Texas teens have two options for completing driver education requirements.

Parent Taught Driver Ed (PTDE)

  • Parent teaches behind-the-wheel driving

Texas Teen License Timeline

The typical path from starting driver education to getting a provisional license.

Age 14+

Start Driver Education

Begin 24-hour classroom course (online or in-person)

Age 15+

Get Learner Permit

After first 6 hours of course + passing written test, visit DPS for permit

Complete Practice Hours

44 hours behind-the-wheel (7 instruction + 7 observation + 30 practice, including 10 night)

Take Road Test
