Get Driver’s License

Learn about the Parent-Taught Driver Education program and how it works in Texas.

This is the final step! After months of learning and practice, it’s time to take the driving test and get your provisional driver’s license.

Prerequisites for the Driving Test

Before you can schedule your driving test, make sure you meet all the following requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 16 years old.
  • Learner’s Permit: You must have held your learner’s permit for at least six months.
  • Driver Education: You must have completed the 32-hour online course and all 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
  • ITTD Program: You must have a valid (non-expired) Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) certificate.

Checklist: What to Bring to the DPS

On the day of your driving test appointment, you will need to bring all the required documents and a vehicle that meets state safety standards.

  • DE-964 Provisional Driver License Certificate: The second certificate you earned in your online course.
  • ITTD Certificate: Your printed, valid certificate of completion.
  • Completed Driving Logs: Your 14-hour and 30-hour behind-the-wheel logs.
  • Your Learner’s Permit.
  • Verification of Enrollment (VOE).
  • Proof of Insurance: For the vehicle you will be using for the test.
  • Parent Instructor: Your parent instructor must accompany you to the DPS.
  • Application Fee: Approximately $11.

The Driving Test

The driving test will assess your ability to safely control the vehicle and obey traffic laws. You will be asked to perform maneuvers such as parallel parking, backing in a straight line, changing lanes, and navigating intersections. Stay calm, follow the examiner’s instructions, and drive safely.

Provisional License Restrictions

Congratulations on passing! Until you turn 18, your provisional license comes with a few restrictions:

  • You may not drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
  • You may not have more than one passenger under 21 who is not a family member.
  • You may not use a cell phone, even hands-free, while driving.
