While it's possible to begin exploring the course before your PTDE packet arrives, there are important limitations to understand. The PTDE packet number issued by TDLR is essential for officially completing the program and receiving your certificate.
Getting Started
After purchasing the course, you can begin filling in your student and parent instructor information while waiting for your PTDE packet number. However, you won't be able to start the classroom lessons until you enter your valid PTDE packet number.
Why the Packet Number Matters
The PTDE packet number is your official authorization from the State of Texas to participate in parent-taught driver education. This number links your course completion to the state's records and is required on your completion certificate. Without it, the Texas DPS will not accept your certificate when you apply for your driver's license.
What You Can Do While Waiting
While waiting for your PTDE packet, use the time productively. Read through the Texas Driver Handbook available on the DPS website, review traffic signs and signals, and discuss driving safety with your parent or guardian. You can also watch driving videos on YouTube or practice with a learner's permit study guide to prepare for the classroom portion.
Adding Your Packet Number Later
Once you receive your PTDE packet by email from TDLR, you can add the packet number to your account. Simply log in, and enter the number in the PTDE packet step. After that, you can begin the classroom lessons.
