Passing Scores and Requirements

The course has two types of assessments: lesson quizzes embedded in each lesson module, and the DPS written exam after Lesson 1. Here's how each works.

Lesson Quizzes

Each of the 12 lessons includes a built-in quiz that tests your understanding of that lesson's material. You must score at least 70% to pass and complete the lesson. If you don't pass on your first attempt, you can review the material and retake the quiz.

DPS Written Exam

After completing Lesson 1 (6 hours of traffic law), you take the in-course DPS written exam. This is the same knowledge test that DPS would normally administer, but you take it online through the course. Passing this exam earns your DE-964E Learner License Certificate.

  • 30 questions covering material from the course
  • 60-minute time limit
  • 70% to pass (21 out of 30 correct)
  • 24-hour cooldown if you don't pass — you must wait a full day before retaking

Practice Quizzes

Practice quizzes are available throughout the course to help you prepare. Each practice quiz has 30 random questions with unlimited retakes and no penalty. They're a good way to check your understanding before attempting the DPS written exam.

Question Format

Questions are primarily multiple-choice, with some true/false. They cover Texas traffic laws, road signs and markings, right-of-way rules, speed limits, defensive driving, sharing the road, and handling emergencies. All questions are based directly on course content.

Certificate Issuance

After passing the DPS written exam, your DE-964E Learner License Certificate is available for download. If it has a green background, print it in color; newer black-and-white certificates can be printed in B&W. Take it to DPS to get your learner permit. After completing all 24 hours of coursework and the remaining program requirements, additional certificates become available from your course dashboard.

Tip
Don't just memorize answers — understand the "why" behind each rule. This deeper understanding will help you on the DPS written exam and, more importantly, make you a safer driver.
