How to Get Your Transfer Certificate

If you're switching your behind-the-wheel instruction to a licensed driving school, you'll need a Transfer Certificate. You can download it from the Resources & Settings tab in your course dashboard once you've completed Step 18 (Provisional Certificate).

What Is a Transfer Certificate?

A DE-964 Transfer Certificate proves you completed the classroom portion of Parent-Taught Driver Education through ParentTaught.com. You give this document to the driving school so they can provide your 14 hours of in-car instruction and observation.

This is a separate document from your Learner License Certificate and Provisional License Certificate — it does not replace either one. The download also includes a Classroom Instruction Log documenting your completed lessons.

Before You Can Download It

You must complete Step 18 (Provisional Certificate) before the Transfer Certificate becomes available. This means finishing all 12 lessons in the course.

If Step 18 is not yet complete, the transfer option in the Resources & Settings tab will show a locked message. Completing just Lesson 1 (the first 6 hours) is not enough — you need all 12 lessons done.

How to Download Your Transfer Certificate

  1. Log in to your course at parenttaught.com
  2. Open the Resources & Settings tab on your course page (not the Certificates section — the transfer certificate is only available in Resources & Settings)
  3. Click Transfer to A Driving School
  4. Click Download Transfer Certificate
  5. Print all pages and give them to the driving school

The certificate downloads as a PDF directly to your device. If you don't see it, check your Downloads folder or Files app — some browsers and phones block downloads or open the file in a new tab. If the download still doesn't work, contact our support team and we can send it to you directly.

If your student completed Step 5 (the in-course written exam) before May 31, 2025, you may see a form asking for the driving school's name and address before downloading. Fill in both fields and submit to generate your certificate.

What's in the Download?

Your PDF includes:

  • DE-964 Transfer Certificate — the official document for the driving school
  • Classroom Instruction Log (appended as additional pages in the same PDF) — lists all 12 lessons and hours completed. Dates may be prefilled based on your course progress, or they may be blank — both are normal. Your parent instructor should review the dates, fill in any blanks, add their driver license number, and sign the log before giving it to the driving school.

Print all pages and give everything to the driving school.

Keep a Copy
Save the PDF before printing. If you need to provide the certificate to a different school later, you can download it again from the same location in your course.

What Happens After You Transfer?

  • Give the printed Transfer Certificate and Classroom Instruction Log to the driving school.
  • The school will provide 14 hours of in-car instruction and observation.
  • You still need to complete 30 hours of practice driving (including 10 at night) separately — typically with a parent.
  • You do not need to log these hours in the ParentTaught.com driving log.

If the driving school asks for a "DL-91A" or a separate "classroom instruction log form," that form has been phased out by TDLR. The Transfer Certificate and the Classroom Instruction Log included in your download are the current official documents. If the school or DPS still requires additional documentation, contact our support team and we can help resolve it.
