In Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE), your first certificate is the Learner License Certificate (DE-964E). This certificate allows you to apply for your Texas learner permit at the DPS.
How to Earn Your Learner License Certificate
To receive your Learner License Certificate (DE-964E), complete these steps in our course:
- Complete Lesson 1: Traffic Laws (6 hours of classroom instruction)
- Pass the in-course DPS written exam with a score of 70% or higher
This can be completed in as little as one day since Lesson 1 is 6 hours (the maximum allowed per day under Texas law).
How to Download Your Certificate
Once you pass the written exam:
- Your certificate becomes available instantly in your course dashboard
- Click the certificate step to download the PDF
- Print the certificate and bring it to your DPS appointment (older green-background templates should be printed in color; newer black-and-white templates can be printed in black and white)
What's Next After Getting This Certificate?
With your Learner License Certificate, you can:
- Schedule a DPS appointment to apply for your learner permit (must be at least 15 years old)
- Begin behind-the-wheel driving practice with your parent instructor once you have your permit
- Continue completing the remaining 11 lessons (18 additional hours) in our course
Certificate Timing Requirements
Texas law limits classroom instruction to 6 hours per day. Our system enforces this by tracking when you purchased your PTDE packet. The certificate cannot be released earlier than state requirements allow, regardless of how quickly you complete the coursework.
