How to Get Your Provisional License Certificate

Your second certificate in Parent-Taught Driver Education is the Provisional Driver License Certificate (DE-964). This certificate is used to apply for your Texas provisional driver's license at the DPS.

Requirements for the Provisional License Certificate

To receive your Provisional Driver License Certificate, complete all 12 lessons in our course:

  • Lesson 1: Traffic Laws (6 hours) - already completed for your Learner Certificate
  • Lessons 2-12: Additional driving topics (18 hours total)
  • Total: 24 hours of classroom instruction

Certificate Timing

Texas law limits instruction to 6 hours per day. Since the course is 24 hours, the minimum time to earn this certificate is 4 days from when you purchased your PTDE packet. Our system enforces these timing requirements automatically.

How to Download Your Certificate

Once you complete all lessons and the timing requirements are met:

  • Your certificate becomes available in your course dashboard
  • Click the Provisional Certificate step to download the PDF

What Else Do You Need for Your Provisional License?

Before you can get your provisional license at the DPS, you also need to:

  • Hold your learner permit for at least 6 months
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Complete 44 hours of behind-the-wheel driving (14 instruction/observation + 30 practice)
  • Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course
  • Pass the driving skills test

The driving hours and ITTD course are tracked separately from this classroom certificate.

Certificate Does Not Expire
Your course completion certificate does not expire. However, if more than 2 years have passed since completing the course and you're applying for a learner license, you'll need to retake the written exam at the DPS.
