Understanding how long your DE-964 certificate remains valid is important for planning when to apply for your Texas driver's permit or license. The validity period depends on your age and the type of license you're applying for.
Certificate Validity
Your DE-964 certificate does not expire. You can use it at any time to apply for your learner's permit or driver's license.
However, if more than 2 years have passed since you earned your Learner License Certificate and you're applying for a Learner License, you will need to retake the written exam at the DPS.
ITTD Certificate Expiration
While your DE-964 certificates do not expire, the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) certificate does. The ITTD certificate is valid for 90 days from completion. You must take your driving skills test at the DPS within 90 days of completing the ITTD course. If it expires, you can retake the free ITTD course to get a new certificate.
Certificate Validity for Driver's License (Ages 18-24)
For applicants aged 18-24, the DE-964 certificate remains valid until you turn 25. Texas law requires driver education completion for all individuals under 25 applying for their first driver's license. You can use your certificate at any time before your 25th birthday.
Permanent Proof of Completion
The DE-964 certificate serves as permanent proof that you completed a TDLR-approved driver education course. Keep your certificate safe until you receive your driver's license, and retain a copy for your records.
What Happens After Age 25?
Once you turn 25, you are no longer required to complete driver education to obtain a Texas driver's license. If you received your DE-964 certificate before turning 25 but didn't get your license, you can still use it for reference, but it won't be required by the DPS.
TDLR School License Validity
Your certificate is only valid if issued by a currently licensed TDLR-approved driving school. The school's TDLR license number appears on your certificate. If the school's license was later revoked or suspended, it could affect your certificate's acceptance. This is rare but worth noting.
