When Can I Start Driving and What Are the Requirements?

This article covers the most common questions about when Texas teens can start driving and what supervision is required with a learner permit.

When Can a Texas Teenager Start Driving?

You can begin driving once you have obtained your Texas Learner's Permit (also called a Learner License). Remember, you will always need to have someone in the passenger seat who is at least 21 years old and has a valid driver license.

Can I Drive Alone with My Texas Learner's Permit?

Do I Need to Complete the Course Before Starting My Driving Hours?

No, you do not need to complete the entire course before starting your driving hours. The Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education program is structured as a "Concurrent" course, which means you can drive (with an adult) once you have your Learner License.

There are different ways to complete everything. Here are some examples - pick whichever works best for your situation:

  • Complete a lesson one day and drive the next day
  • Complete all the lessons first, then start driving
  • Complete your driving hours first, then complete the lessons
Flexibility is Key
The concurrent structure gives families flexibility to work at their own pace. Just remember that all 44 hours of behind-the-wheel time and all course lessons must be completed before your teen can take the driving test for their Provisional Driver License.

Supervision Requirements Summary

  • Age: Supervising adult must be at least 21 years old
  • License: Must have a valid driver license (held for at least 1 year for the 30-hour practice log)
  • Position: Must be in the front passenger seat
  • 14-Hour Instruction: Must be done with the designated Parent Instructor only
  • 30-Hour Practice: Can be done with any qualified adult meeting the requirements above
