Phase 1: Getting Started (Before Any Driving)
Order the PTDE packet from TDLR ($20 fee)

Read the Parent Taught Driver Education Guide completely
Verify you meet parent instructor eligibility requirements
Enroll in a TDLR-approved online course
Complete Module 1 of the classroom instruction
Phase 2: Getting the Learner's Permit
After completing the first 6 hours of classroom instruction (Module 1), your teen is eligible to apply for a learner's permit at the DPS.
Complete Module 1 of classroom instruction (6 hours minimum)
Gather required documents (birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of residency)
Get the VOE form from your teen's school
Schedule a DPS appointment online
Bring all documents plus the PTDE packet to DPS
Pass the in-course written knowledge test (completed online before your DPS visit)
Pay permit fees and receive learner's permit
Phase 3: Behind-the-Wheel Training
