Before you can begin any instruction, you must request the Parent-Taught Driver Education Program Guide from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). This is a mandatory step for all PTDE participants.
What is the PTDE Program Guide?
The PTDE Program Guide is a packet that officially designates you as a parent instructor for your teen. It contains important forms and information required by the state. You cannot begin the online course or any driving instruction until you have the receipt from this purchase.
How to Order the Packet
The easiest and fastest way to get the packet is by ordering it online directly from the TDLR.
- Go to the TDLR Website: Visit the official TDLR request page: Request for Parent Taught Driver Education Instructor Designation.
- Fill out the Application: You will need to provide information about the student and the designated parent instructor. Ensure all names match legal documents like the birth certificate.
- Pay the Fee: There is a non-refundable $20 fee paid directly to the TDLR. This is separate from your driver education course fee.
- Choose Delivery Method: You can choose to have the packet emailed or physically mailed. We strongly recommend selecting email delivery. You will receive a link to download the packet immediately after your purchase is complete, allowing you to start the course without delay.
Important Things to Remember
- Do Not Start Early: The DPS will check the receipt date on your packet. Any course hours or driving instruction completed before this date will be invalid.
- Lost Your Packet?: If you lose your packet or can’t find the email, you can retrieve it from the TDLR website using your email address or receipt number. Find your packet here.
- Packet Issues?: Since the packet is a TDLR document, ParentTaught.com cannot assist with purchase issues or lost packets. You must contact the TDLR directly for support.
