Frequently Asked Questions

Learn about the Parent-Taught Driver Education program and how it works in Texas.

Have questions about the Parent-Taught Driver Education process? We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common inquiries below.

How much does the entire Parent-Taught program cost?

While prices vary, you can typically expect to pay around $107 in total. This includes the online course fee (around $60), the $20 TDLR PTDE Program Guide fee, and the DPS fees for the learner’s permit and driver’s license (around $27 total).

How long does it take to complete the PTDE program?

The minimum time is six months, as this is how long a teen must hold their learner’s permit. Most families complete the program in 6 to 9 months, allowing ample time for the online course and the 44 hours of driving practice.

Do the DE-964 certificates from the online course expire?

No, the DE-964 certificates themselves do not expire. However, the passing score for the written knowledge test (indicated on your learner license certificate) is only valid for two years. If you wait longer than that to apply for your permit, you will have to retake the written test at the DPS.

What happens if my parent or guardian is not eligible to be an instructor?

If a parent or guardian is not eligible, they can designate another adult to be the instructor. This person must meet all the standard instructor requirements, plus be at least 25 years old and have 7 years of driving experience. If no eligible instructor can be found, the student will need to complete their driver education through a traditional driving school.

Can my teen switch from a traditional driving school to the Parent-Taught program?

Yes, but it’s important to understand what transfers. The time your teen has held their learner’s permit will still count towards the six-month requirement. However, all 32 classroom hours must be completed with the PTDE course provider, and the 14 hours of formal in-car instruction must be given by the designated parent instructor after the PTDE packet has been ordered.

What if the DPS asks for an old form like the DL-91A (Classroom Instruction Log)?

The DL-91A and other similar forms have been phased out by the TDLR and are no longer required. Your DE-964 certificate is the official proof of classroom completion. If a DPS employee insists on seeing an old form, you can refer them to email TPSTprogram@dps.texas.gov for clarification.
