Complete Driving Hours

Learn about the Parent-Taught Driver Education program and how it works in Texas.

Once the student has their learner’s permit, it’s time to hit the road! The state of Texas requires a total of 44 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training, which must be carefully logged.

The 44-Hour Breakdown

The 44 hours are split into two main components: formal instruction and general practice.

1. Formal Instruction & Observation (14 Hours)

These 14 hours must be conducted by the designated parent instructor listed on the PTDE Program Guide.

  • 7 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Instruction: The student is driving while the parent instructor provides guidance from the passenger seat.
  • 7 Hours of In-Car Observation: The student is in the passenger seat, observing as the parent instructor drives and explains various driving situations and maneuvers.

2. Supervised Practice (30 Hours)

These hours are for practicing and reinforcing driving skills in various conditions.

  • Supervisor: This practice can be supervised by any licensed adult who is at least 21 years old and has held their license for at least one year. This can be the parent instructor or another trusted adult.
  • Night Driving: At least 10 of the 30 practice hours must be completed at night (30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise).

Logging Your Hours

It is critical to keep an accurate log of all 44 driving hours. You have two options for this:

  • Digital Log: Many online course providers, including ParentTaught.com, offer a digital tool to log hours. You can then print the completed log to take to the DPS.
  • Paper Logs: You can download and print the official TDLR forms to log hours by hand. You will need both the 14-Hour Instruction Log (DL-91B) and the 30-Hour Practice Log.

The completed log(s) must be presented at the DPS when the student applies for their provisional driver’s license.
