Driving Manager Guide

Welcome to the Driving Manager! This page is designed to help you log your required 44 driving hours.

Read each section below:

Once you have your Learner’s Permit from the DPS, you must meet the requirements for a Provisional Driver License. You are required to complete 44 Hours of Driving. You can start driving before completing the course Lessons (2-12), or afterwards, whichever you prefer.

The 44 Driving Hours are divided into three categories:

  • Observation (7 hours)
    • You sit in the passenger seat while your Official Instructor drives.
  • Instruction (7 hours)
    • You drive while your Official Instructor is in the passenger seat.
  • Practice (30 hours)
    • You drive with a passenger who is at least 21 years old and has held their driver license for a minimum of one year.
    • At least 10 of these hours must be nighttime driving.

Instruction Limits: You can’t take a road trip to complete your driving hours in two days. You can only complete a maximum of 2 hours of driving per day. If you log your hours in the Driving Manager, we’ll automatically make sure you stay within the limits.

Your instructor can teach you whichever way they want.

With that in mind, we’ve created a Lesson Plan that they can use to instruct you for the 7 Hours of Instruction and 7 Hours of Observation:

Additionally, the Texas DPS has created a guide designed to assist with the 30 Practice Hours:

Lastly, we’ve created a short guide for instructors with coaching tips:
