It’s a common question whether driver education certificates expire in Texas. Hereβs what you need to know about the certificates related to your ParentTaught.com course:
DE-964 Certificates (Learner License & Provisional License)
The DE-964 certificates issued by ParentTaught.com upon completion of the required course modules (Learner License Certificate after Lesson 1 & the DPS Exam, and Provisional Driver License Certificate after Lesson 12) do not expire.
However, there’s an important detail regarding the Learner License Certificate:
- The certificate itself is valid indefinitely.
- The written test score (indicated by a “P” for pass on the certificate) is valid for two years from the date the certificate was issued.
- If you wait longer than two years after receiving your Learner License Certificate to apply for your learner’s permit at the DPS, your teen will need to retake the written knowledge test at a DPS office.
The Provisional Driver License Certificate (the second DE-964 you earn) also does not expire.
Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Certificate
It’s important to distinguish the DE-964 certificates from the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) certificate. The ITTD program is a separate, free, 2-hour course required by the DPS before taking the driving test.
- The ITTD certificate expires 90 days after completion.
- Your teen must take their driving test at the DPS (or a third-party testing facility) within 90 days of completing the ITTD course. If the certificate expires, they will need to retake the ITTD course.
In Summary
- ParentTaught.com DE-964 Certificates: Do not expire.
- Written Test Score (on Learner License DE-964): Valid for 2 years.
- ITTD Certificate (from DPS program): Expires after 90 days.
